This weeks foodie obsession / my yellow fingers
This morning at the West Reading farmer's market I found the most beautiful eggplants (aubergines) and I brought them back to my studio to paint. They're almost too pretty to eat.
However, the real excitement this week is the fresh turmeric I bought on eBay! And all the ensuing delisciousness! The back story here, is the beautiful fermentation pot Karen Palcho made - you can see it on the counter in many of the food-prep photos. Over the summer, with some suggestions from Karen, I tried fermenting green beans, carrots and cucumbers, and that was interesting but not amazing, I like lots of flavor and I sensed that there was more to this fermenting...
In the meantime I was looking into the health aspects of turmeric, which led to information on fresh turmeric and I went for it.
It's never a straight path with me but once I had the fresh turmeric in hand I found a recipe called Golden Sauerkraut from Green Kitchen Stories, organic cabbage and carrots and fresh turmeric - you "massage" it to release the juices which is where the yellow fingers come in. I'm pretty excited about this one! I have five mason jars sitting on the counter and only have to wait 2 - 4 weeks to taste it.
When the turmeric arrived I posted a photo to Instagram and my friend Nancey shared a recipe for fermented ginger, turmeric and limes - this one only ferments for 3 or 4 days. Nice!
In the meantime I grated some and added it to my favorite rice (Trader Joe's Brown Jasmine) with some mashed lemon grass. Oh yum! I didn't think that rice could be improved.
